Planting Crocuses around the Balkans 2012-2013

In this project Duvall initiates a conversation about the complexity of developing public projects in environments that are outside of one’s familiar context and knowledge base. The challenge is to be respectful to the social and political framework with which one is engaging while positioning oneself clearly.

Duvall developed the project Planting Crocuses around the Balkans in order to make visible her responses to this complex cultural environment. Duvall planted single crocus bulbs in locations where she felt that someone might appreciate a bloom next spring. Sometimes these were neglected corners that would benefit from a touch of natural color. Other locations were those that embedded evidence of past trauma like bombed out or abandoned buildings. In all of these cases, what was being made visible was Duvall’s response to an environment that through these gestures she shared with unknown local viewers.
