The Hole
Presented at OCADU as part of the exhibition Signs of Life curated by Maiko Tanaka for Nuit Blanche Independent Projects 2015
The Hole began as an investigation of the root system of the wild rose. But for me the most important part was the hole - the chance to stand in it, to lie down and look at the threads of prairie grass roots, to smell the earth, and to listen to the wind gusting overhead. Such a space evokes primal life, death, intimacy, seclusion and the unknown. In The Hole a dog sniffs vigorously and systematically at every crack and cranny of the hole for the duration of the video. This video acknowledges different ways of knowing, from my initial logical investigation of growth patterns of a familiar species to the dog’s reliance on smell to explore a space.
